You Googlin’ me
Nearly everyone is Googling, Tweeting, Facebooking, and Digging. Just about no one is talking.
By Roger Ewing
In Martin Scorsese’s 1976 classic movie Taxi Driver, a deranged Travis Bickle, portrayed by Robert De Niro, asks his own reflection this now famous question, “you talkin’ to me?”.

De Niro’s character is a troubled and conflicted New York City taxi driver who has isolated himself from society. His aloneness allows Bickles’ demons to get the better of him and he lashes out at the decadence he sees in the city. Travis Bickle is emblematic of the struggle we face in our modern lives. Anonymity has become the desired posture. And like Bickle, we have created cocoons of privacy around ourselves.
Problem: How do we develop new business relationships in an environment where our customers and clients are demanding more privacy and seclusion?
Nearly 85% of all my business transactions are the direct or indirect result of someone recommending me. Sound like a large number? Do some research into the specific sources of your successful business transactions and you will discover, as I have, that developing and maintaining relationships is probably the most important aspect of your business.
At the end of the day, we are all in the business of relationships.
In a rapidly expanding web based world, privacy has become a scarce commodity. Modern man seeks paparazzi free space. The development of filtering software, and mechanisms to ensure our separateness, has become big business. No one wants to hear from anyone they don’t already know and trust.
The irony is that your business enterprise, regardless of the category, is probably dependent upon the continued expansion of your sales base.
Solution: “Micro Community Blogs” that provide meaningful, quality information to people on a neighborhood level. I have found this to be a simple and effective marketing strategy that gives me permission from individuals in the community to communicate directly.
Information is the drug of choice in our modern civilization. In an effort to satisfy their desire for information, modern humans Google everything and everyone. If information is King, then Google is surely Emperor.
65% of all inquiries on the Internet begin with Google.
Lets put that in perspective. According to marketing research company comScore, in the United States alone, some 14.3 billion Internet searches were conducted in May 2009. comScore estimates there were 9.3 billion searches on Google for that month, representing an astounding 299.83 million Google searches per day!
Micro Community Blogging involves an Internet strategy that provides valuable information to individuals in their cocoon like sanctuaries. Reaching out to people, community by community, will prove to be the successful approach for enterprising marketers.
Here are the basic rules of engagement.
1. The information we share with the community must be in the first person.
2. This information must be relevant and topical on a neighborhood level.
3. Never sell anything in the Micro Community Blog.
Blogging is the preferred means of communicating in a village-like environment. Blogging has replaced the chatter we used to share with our neighbors and it has become a replacement for the party-line telephone that served as the internet in our parents ancient analog world.
You Googlin’ me? Hope so, because I already Googled you.

Pacific Tennis Club in Westlake Village
Alive, Well and Growing
By: Sher Hann
Nestled behind the Westlake Inn, with 10 courts and a minuscule pro shop, Pacific Tennis Club caters to young, old and “tweeners.” Despite the current challenging economy, the club’s membership has actually increased about 3% over the past two years, according to club owner Bowie Hahn. This growth is all the more amazing given the fact the local population is – let’s be honest – aging.
What the club lacks in physical amenities (a club house and a private restroom would be nice), it makes up for in programming. I have seen kids so young they can’t tell their left from their right, as well as players we all refer to as “they must have been really good at one time” run, shuffle or hobble onto the courts. In fact, there’s something for every age: ladies leagues, men’s leagues, clinics for all skill levels, programming for children and youth (it is just a few blocks from both Oaks Christian and Westlake High School), and social events.
Just recently PTC contracted with the City of Agoura Hills to run their tennis programs, with the primary site being Agoura High School. A community-based club, allowing both members and non-members to participate in activities (non-members pay extra), PTC is also the lowest-priced tennis club in the area, according to Hahn – and perhaps the only club that is growing.
So don’t let the local aging trend stop you – or your skill level for that matter. Come check out a racquet (for a small fee) if you don’t already have one, check out the pros (usually worthwhile), and enjoy your time on the courts. If you have a business, service or just an interesting concept that you think your Conejo Valley neighbors might find of interest, e-mail me your idea (idea@SherHann.com). It may see the light of electronic media here at www.EwingSIR.com.

If You’re Sick, Please Stay Home
After being in the hospital for 4 days with my daughter, I really started to think.
By: Denise Arledge
Why do parents send their children to school sick? I just received a call from the Las Virgenes School District asking, or should I say pleading parents not to send their children to school ill. I know that at my daughters school alone, there is about 15% of the students with the flu. I didn’t say H1N1, I said the flu. We all have to do our part, here is the information that can keep our families healthy:
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
2. “Hands-off-the-face” approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don’t trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation.
4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton swabs dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*
5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C. *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomache here they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

The Grass Isn’t Always Greener
Have you ever imagined Paradise?

Couples Retreat
By: Denise Arledge
What is the definition of the perfect get-away? Is it you and your significant other without the kids, bills, work and chores? Welcome to “Couples Retreat” starring Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell, and Kristin Davis. This endearing storyline focuses on four couples and their different views of paradise, and how sometimes though it may seem “greener” in paradise you find that your own backyard was what you wanted the whole time.
For me this movie was entertaining in many different ways. The scenery was incredible and actually looked like it could only be “Hollywood” created but wasn’t. Couple’s Retreat was filmed on Bora Bora and what you see is the real thing. The cast was engaging and the storyline funny. It’s about four couples, their different dynamics and just how far you will go to help a friend when you think there is a silver lining in it for yourself, when in fact that said silver lining might just rock the very foundation you thought you were happy with. Entertaining movie, worth the ticket price and the smile it will put on your face.

Famous Daves BBQ in Westlake
Try Dave’s BBQ and spice up your taste buds
By: Rob Jordan
Famous Daves BBQ has opened in the restaurant space at Westlake and Thousand Oaks Blvd vacated by Applebees a while back, and it was packed the night we went in. Though new to this area, there are about 150 other Famous Dave restaurants across the country. The menu is varied and interesting, the service was great, and the prices were reasonable.
No remodeling was done to the space, so they will have the big bar in the middle, surrounded by circular high top tables and just a couple of booths. Around the perimeter of the restaurant there are booths and tables galore for families and large parties. We had the appetizer combo, which featured ribs, wings, cheesesticks and more. There was a bunch of food and great for sharing. For dinner we had a rib combo plate, a brisket sandwich and pulled pork. All were yummy.
Famous Daves feels a bit like Wood Ranch, but they have a much broader menu. This is a winner.
