North Ranch Tennis and Food Share
Successful North Ranch and Ventura County FOOD SHARE
By Michele Hren
Monday night the temperature was chilly but I had a warm and fuzzy feeling inside as I watched the festivities at the North Ranch County Club. North Ranch and surrounding Conejo Valley communities came out in full force to support Food Share, Ventura County’s Food Bank.
As I enjoyed a light complimentary meal, North Ranch’s very own tennis star, Sam Querrey and his energetic Sr. Samurai’s put on a tennis exhibition. He later invited others to join him on the court as part of the 1st of 3 events happening this month.
Last night, a variety of items from rounds of golf to Halloween items were raffled off and donations benefited the Food Share organization. Bonnie Weigel, CEO of Food Share, graciously thanked the crowd for their participation and anxiously awaits the next 2 events. The Charity Dinner on Sept. 25th and the Pro-Am Tennis Tournament Sunday Sept. 27th will undoubtedly be a tremendous success for this worthy cause.
If you would like to join the fun, please contact Marla Schwartz for more details at maginary@earthlink.net.

Fire Prevention Week for Southern California, October 4-10, 2009
Fire Season Has Arrived In Southern California
By Tom Geiser
Since erupting August 26th, the Station Fire, burning in southern California, has ravaged more than 140,000 acres, killed two firefighters, destroyed more than five dozen homes, and is the largest wildfire in Los Angeles county in over 100 years.
We are very fortunate this year. So far our homes have not been threatened by fire. The National Fire Protection Association, NFPA, is sponsoring fire prevention week. Here are some fire facts you should know to keep you and your family safe this fire season.
* 1.2 million acres of US woodland is burned each year.
* Weather conditions directly contribute to wildfires. Extended periods of drought that create large quantities of fuel for fire.
* Lightning strikes the Earth over 100,000 times a day. 10-20% cause a fire.
* A large wildfire, is capable of creating is own weather.
* Running crown fires are a firefighter’s worst nightmare because they burn extremely hot, travel rapidly and can change direction quickly. Crown fires spread by wind moving quickly along the tops of trees.
This Fire season be vigilant and report suspicious behavior to authorities. In the words of Smokey The Bear, “Only you can prevent forest fires”.

Blue Table Restaurant Comes to Old Agoura
Blue Table To Open In Whizin Shopping Center
By Dana Olmes
Jim and Ellen Marcione always loved cooking. Jim was forever experimenting with different recipes and ingredients. In 2004, after 20 years of family and friends eating at thier home insisting, “you have to open a restaurant”, Jim and Ellen, together with Stafano and Gina Lisi, opened Blue Table.
The friendly atmosphere combined with fresh food, a walk-in cheese closet, and walls packed with a selection of their favorite wines, make Blue Table a favorite gathering place for Calabasas locals. Take-out or eat-in, the always fresh seasonal menu reflects the joy and passion for food you will always find at Blue Table.
Now, Blue Table is coming to Old Agoura. Ellen says “the new restaurant should be open by October first and will be located in the Whizin Shopping Center next door to the Canyon Club”. We can’t wait. To see the menu, visit www.bluetablecalabasas.com

Oak Park Has A New Water Park
Beat The Heat In Oak Park

My Grandson, Cameron Davis
By Roger Ewing
My six year old grandson enjoyed splashing in the fountains at the new Oak Park Water Park this past week. With temperatures in triple digits, the new kid friendly park was the perfect solution to a hot, humid afternoon.
The park will be open from 10 AM until 6 PM through September 30 and reopen in May next year. Don’t miss the fun, take your children, and maybe yourself to the water park for some wet fun.
The water park is located at the Oak Canyon Park off Kanan Road.

Under Watering Your Yard May Affect Your Home
Water restrictions may help cause unwanted settling.
By Sher Hann
As you are likely aware, recent water usage restrictions are now in effect that significantly reduce our ability to water our home’s landscape. However, there may be a hidden downside to under watering your yard.
Landscaping adjacent to a house that is used to getting a regular amount of water possesses a more or less static moisture level. This ambient moisture tends to keep the soil from drying, which in some types of soil, could result in soil contracting away from the foundation. Greatly reducing or eliminating the watering near a homes foundation, may result in the foundation walls actually shifting to the newly created space.
Tom Pelletier, owner of The Foundation Works, typically inspects several foundations a day in various parts of Los Angeles County. Over past weeks, he claims there has been a distinct rise in the number of calls he has received from homeowners indicating that strange things have suddenly started to happen in their homes. Things such as cracks in walls, sticking doors, floor seams showing separation, etc. Some of these issues may simply be normal settling of a structure, but some may be the result of your new watering schedule.
Tom recommends that we do not ignore the mandated water restrictions; but recommends that you alter your watering schedule to ensure that the landscaping closest to the house gets close to its “previously normal” amount of water. You may restrict watering areas that are further from the house, thus lessening the effects of soil shrinkage on the foundation.
Specific recommendations can be found at www.bewaterwise.com
