Since erupting August 26th, the Station Fire, burning in southern California, has ravaged more than 140,000 acres, killed two firefighters, destroyed more than five dozen homes, and is the largest wildfire in Los Angeles county in over 100 years.

We are very fortunate this year.  So far our homes have not been threatened by fire.  The National Fire Protection Association, NFPA, is sponsoring fire prevention week.  Here are some fire facts you should know to keep you and your family safe this fire season.

*  1.2 million acres of US woodland is burned each year.

*  Weather conditions directly contribute to wildfires. Extended periods of drought that create large quantities of fuel for fire.

* Lightning strikes the Earth over 100,000 times a day. 10-20% cause a fire.

*  A large wildfire, is capable of creating is own weather.

* Running crown fires are a firefighter’s worst nightmare because they burn extremely hot, travel rapidly and can change direction quickly. Crown fires spread by wind moving quickly along the tops of trees.

This Fire season be vigilant and report suspicious behavior to authorities.  In the words of Smokey The Bear, “Only you can prevent forest fires”.
